In this post we are going to see several old machines lithographies of another book of the second half of XIX century brought to us by El Bibliomata.

I don’t know anything about most of them but they seem very curious.

For example, I have found a lithography of the first machine that was able of recording sounds visually, called phonautograph. The problem of the machine was that it is not able of playing back recorded sounds. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/27/arts/27soun.html?_r=1.

I have post the phonautograph in first place. If you know something about these items please share it in comments, thank you.

First ones appeared in 9th or 10th century in eastern Persia and they were spread to Europe through Spain. These windmills were used to grind corn or draw up water, and quite different from the later European versions. They have played an important role on our history but probably we know about them because of Don Quixote scene attacking windmills that he believes to be ferocious giants. This gave international fame to La Mancha and its windmills, and is the origin of the phrase “tilting at windmills”, to describe an act of futility.

The Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts centre on Bennelong Point in Sydney, Australia. It was conceived and largely built by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who in 2003 received the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s highest honour. The citation stated

There is no doubt that the Sydney Opera House is his masterpiece. It is one of the great iconic buildings of the 20th century, an image of great beauty that has become known throughout the world – a symbol for not only a city, but a whole country and continent.

The Opera House was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 June 2007. It is one of the world’s most distinctive 20th century buildings, and one of the most famous performing arts centres in the world.

I have found this song called Paper planes , <- click while watching this post, by M.I.A. and I have made it the theme of this post.

There is a flying Guiness record 27.6 seconds by Ken Blackburn and you can alsolearn about paper planes here and here.

I think it could be a good idea in this crisis time to rediscover new cheap ways of entertaiment and paper planes competitions can be funny (time flying, distance, design, races between 2 points,…), you can see an example in this set.

Many people visit this blog from social media sites (meneame, wykop, stumbleupon, …) so if someone want to organise any paper planes competition in any city of the world please send me photos, I will gladly publish them.

Have fun!

The average centre-to-centre distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,403 km, about thirty times the diameter of the Earth. The common centre of mass of the system (the barycentre) is located about 1,700 km—a quarter the Earth’s radius—beneath the surface of the Earth. The Moon makes a complete orbit around the Earth every 27.3 days (the orbital period), and the periodic variations in the geometry of the Earth–Moon–Sun system are responsible for the lunar phases that repeat every 29.5 days (the synodic period).
NASA is returning to the moon to build a sustainable long term human presence. The Constellation Program is building the Ares rockets and Orion crew capsule.

The Orient Express is the name of a long-distance passenger train originally operated by the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. Its route has changed many times, and several routes have in the past concurrently used the name (or slight variants thereof). Although the original Orient Express was simply a normal international railway service, the name has become synonymous with intrigue and luxury travel. The two city names most intimately associated with the Orient Express are Paris and Istanbul, the original endpoints of the service.
